What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is a lotion that is rubbed on the scalp daily. It is available without a prescription.
The medication contains either 2% to 5% minoxidil. It is believed the stronger version is more effective. However, the stronger version also includes side effects, such as itchiness or dryness in the area it is applied. Minoxidil also shows results only on using it for several months. The balding process resumes on stopping the minoxidil treatment.

How to Use

Minoxidil is an application lotion to be rubbed on the scalp. It widens the hair follicle by causing thick strands of hair. In this way, it prolongs resulting in higher and longer number of hair strands.  Though, the physiological basis is not known exactly, it has shown evidence to be effective and safe on using properly. There is hair density increase of 10% to 12%.

Remember to follow exact dosing as per the instructions. Wash your scalp using mild shampoo, before use so that your scalp and hair is dry prior to applying the minoxidil solution. After application, the solution must be at least for 4 hours on the scalp before washing. Your hair must not get wet from rain water after the solution application.

Minoxidil comes in two strengths 2 % and 5%. Both strengths are to be applied twice a day to the dry scalp. To acquire best results, you must continue this treatment with lots of patience. Ascertain to thoroughly wash your hands after applying minoxidil so that it does not spread to other body parts.

Who Can Use

Minoxidil solution promotes hair re-growth and can be used by people experiencing thinning or hair gradually or losing hair gradually on the top of their head. If you have allergic complaints, avoid using this solution. You may notice temporary loss even after application of minoxidil solution up to 2 weeks. However, do not use this solution with other medicines.

Side Effects

Redness, stinging or burning is experienced on application by some. In case you experience any of these side effects worsen, it is best to promptly contact your doctor immediately.
The serious side effects may be dizziness, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, unwanted body or facial hair, unusual weight gain, hands or feet swelling, breathing difficulty or tiredness.
Allergic reaction is very serious, but this is rare. Nevertheless, seek medical advice immediately if you notice serious reaction signs. The allergic reactions include swelling of tongue, face or throat, rash or itching, trouble in breathing or severe dizziness.

Proper storage

It is important to store minoxidil solution always between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees) at room temperature. Remember to store in a closed container. Store it away from light and heat. Keep minoxidil solution out of the reach of your kids and away from pets.
